ANN McCAIG
Honorary Chair

Ann McCaigAs the Honorary Chair of the Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institute, Ann is committed to continuing the work of her husband, the late J.R. (Bud) McCaig who founded the Institute with a donation of $10 million in March 2004. Ann and Bud were married for 21 years and dedicated to building a world-class health and medical system in Calgary.

Ann’s passion for health, education and the community is evidenced by her distinguished track record. She is currently the Chair of the Calgary Health Trust and the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre where she led a campaign to raise $9 million for a new treatment facility. Ann served as Co-chair of the campaign to raise $60 million for the new Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Ann is a Director with the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Foundation, Suncor Energy Inc., and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. She is also a Trustee for the Killam Trust and Chancellor Emeritus of the University of Calgary.

Her contributions as a philanthropist, volunteer and corporate leader have been recognized at many levels. Ann is a Member of the Order of Canada and has received the Alberta Order of Excellence, the Alberta Centennial Award, the Rotary Integrity Award, her Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta, the University of Saskatchewan Alumni Humanitarian Award, the Paul Harris Fellowship Rotary International Award, the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award, the Queen Elizabeth Award, and the 125th Confederation of Canada Award.


IAN ROBINSON
Chair

Ian RobinsonIan has been Chair of the Institute’s Board of Directors since its inception in 2004.  He assumed this position after serving as Treasurer and a Director of the Western Orthopaedic and Arthritis Research Foundation, the predecessor to the Institute, for 15 years.

Ian is Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of ExAlta Energy Inc.  He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta and the Canadian Tax Foundation.

He has served on various committees of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, the Independent Petroleum Association, and Social Venture Partners, which applies a venture capital model to philanthropy.


Cy Frank
Co-Vice Chair

Cy FrankABJHI grew out of the vision Cy and other medical practitioners and researchers had for world-leading bone and joint health care in Alberta.

An orthopaedic surgeon specializing in knee surgery, Cy devotes a portion of his time to basic research in ligament healing and transplantation, with a focus on the prevention of osteoarthritis. He is a pioneer in developing models for grafting and repairing the anterior cruciate ligament, one of two sets of ligaments that provide the knee with much of its stability. Through his position as Executive Director of ABJHI, Cy pursues his passionate interest in health services and systems, particularly in designing and evaluating innovative approaches to delivering bone and joint health care services in Alberta.

He is a professor of surgery in the Division of Orthopaedics at the University of Calgary/Alberta Health Services. He is also the McCaig Professor of Joint Injury and Arthritis Research. As a researcher, Cy serves as Scientist at the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research.


DON DICK
Co-Vice Chair
Don Dick

As a founding member of the Institute, Don has played a significant role in establishing the Institute as the catalyst for a better way to deliver public health care to Albertans suffering from bone and joint disorders.

An orthopaedic surgeon, Don is active in medical practice, teaching and professional service.

He specializes in adult joint arthroplasty (repair and replacement of joints) and in general paediatric orthopaedics (treatment of musculoskeletal disorders in children).  Located in Edmonton, he is Medical Lead for Orthopaedics and Medical Director of the Bone and Joint Program for Alberta Health Services Edmonton.

He is Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta.  He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association and is Past-President of the Alberta Orthopaedic Society.


JACK DONALD
Board Member
Jack Donald

Jack is an entrepreneur and volunteer who has served the Red Deer community and the province in numerous capacities.

He is President and CEO of Parkland Properties Ltd., and Chairman Emeritus of Parkland Industries Ltd., the petroleum refining and marketing company from which he retired as President and CEO in 2002. 

Jack also serves as Chairman Emeritus of Canadian Western Bank, and as a Director of Sifton Energy Inc., Deermart Equipment Sales Ltd., and Western Tractor Inc.

Among his community activities, he is a past President and member of the Westerner Exposition Association and a member of the Rotary Club of Red Deer.  He is a former Red Deer City councillor and served as a member of the Board of Governors of Red Deer College and as Chairman of the Alberta Opportunity Company.  He was Chairman of the 1994 Alberta Tax Reform Commission, and was Co-Chairman of the 1998 Personal Income Tax Review Committee and the 2000 Alberta Business Tax Review Commission.  Red Deer College recognized the contributions Jack and his wife, Joan have made to education and the college by naming the Donald School of Business in their honor.

Jack's business and community activities were recognized in 2002 when he was inducted into the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame and was named Red Deer Citizen of the Year.


JOHN FERGUSON
Board Member
John Ferguson

John’s contributions to the community and the province were recognized in 2005 when he was awarded the Alberta Centennial medal. 

He is founder and Chairman of the Board of Princeton Developments Ltd., and serves as a Director with Suncor Energy, Royal Bank of Canada Inc., Fountain Tire Ltd., and Strategy Summit Ltd. 

John is a Director of the C.D. Howe Institute, a national, non-profit organization that aims to improve Canadians’ standard of living by fostering sound economic and social policy.  He is also an Advisory Member of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.

In the community, he serves as Chancellor Emeritus and Chairman Emeritus of the University of Alberta, and as a member of the Business Advisory Council of the School of Business, University of Alberta.

He is also a member of the World Presidents’ Organization, and a fellow of the Alberta Institute of Chartered Accountants and of the Institute of Corporate Directors.

John was awarded the commemorative Golden Jubilee Medal in 2003, and in 1992 received the commemorative medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada.


DICK HASKAYNE
Board Member

Dick HaskayneDick has been a Director of 20 public companies, serving as Chairman of six of them, and is noted for his philanthropic support and volunteer commitment to the community.

He currently sits on the Board of Weyerhaeuser Company, and is past Chairman of the Board of TransCanada Corporation, Fording Inc., NOVA Corporation, TransAlta Corporation, and MacMillan Bloedel.  He was Chairman, President and CEO of Interhome Energy Inc. (IPL and Home Oil), and was President of Hudson’s Bay Oil and Gas, where he spent more than 20 years.

Dick holds the title of Board Chair Emeritus at the University of Calgary.  In 2001, the University of Calgary honoured him with The Richard F. Haskayne Chair in Accounting, and in 2002 the Faculty of Management was renamed the Haskayne School of Business.  In 2002, he and his wife, Lois, received the Generosity of Spirit Award for their philanthropy by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Dick is an Officer of the Order of Canada and has received the Canadian Business Leader Award. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and of the Institute of Corporate Directors.  He is also a Trustee of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, a Board member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, and a life member of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, and serves on the Advisory Committee for the Order of Canada.


JOE LOUGHEED
Board Member

Joe LougheedJoe co-chairs the Private Equity practice group of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP, a national business law firm and devotes considerable time and energy to community service. 

He is a director of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Governors of the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), and is active in both federal and provincial politics.  Joe is also a director of the Lougheed House Conservation Society, which operates the Lougheed House National Historic Site in Calgary, and is a member of the Board of Trustees, Queen’s University.

He is a former director of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Kids Help Phone Alberta Advisory Committee, the Developmental Disabilities Resource Centre, the Alberta Lung Association, and the Heritage Park Foundation.  From 2003 to 2006, he was a member of the United Way of Calgary and Area Campaign Cabinet.


TED NEWALL
Board Member
Ted Newall

In addition to almost 50 years in private industry, Ted has devoted many years of service to developing sound public policy in Canada.  He has served as Chairman of the Business Council on National Issues and of The Conference Board of Canada, and received the Public Policy Forum award and the APEX Public Service Citation for his contribution to cooperation between government and the private sector in the area of public policy.

An Officer of the Order of Canada, Ted is the former Chairman of NOVA Corporation, a Director of Maple Leaf Foods Inc., and Chairman Emeritus of Canadian Pacific Railway. He has served as a Director of nine other public companies.  He is also a Director of the Canadian Public Accountability Board.

Ted was inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of fame in 2001.  Prior to that, he was named The Financial Post CEO of the Year for 1993, received the University of Alberta’s Canadian Business Leader Award in 1996, and was named International Business Executive of the Year for 1998 by the Canadian Council for International Business.  He also received the Honorary Membership Award in 1998 from the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of Alberta, and the Conference Board of Canada Honorary Associate Award in 2000.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors, and an Honorary Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada.  Ted received his Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Saskatchewan, University of Calgary, University of Regina, and University of Ottawa.
