ABOUT US - OUR FOUNDER: J.R. (Bud) McCaig

J.R. (Bud) McCaig founded the Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institute with a donation of $10 million in March 2004. As the Institute's founder, he held the position of Honorary Chair on the Board of Directors.

Mr. McCaig's vision was for a sustainable, high-quality system of public health care. His passion for the area of bone and joint health was evident in his philanthropic pursuits. The vision and energy he possessed are key elements of the Institute he created.

Known for his business successes and immense generosity to the community at large, Mr. McCaig's passionate commitment to revitalized and innovative health care for Albertans and the global community was only one of many notable qualities. Mr. McCaig was a powerful champion of medical advancement, which he demonstrated in his many leadership roles throughout the 1990s including: Chairman of the Calgary Regional Health Authority; Chair of the Provincial Health Authorities of Alberta and the Council of Chairs; and Co-Chair of the Project Motion campaign for the development of the McCaig Centre for Joint Injury and Arthritis.

His untimely death in January 2005 is mourned by the members of the Institute. Although he has passed away, the Institute remains committed to his vision.
