Early results of research in Alberta suggest obese patients have a significantly elevated risk of developing medical complications while in hospital recovering from a hip or knee replacement. Among the highest-risk complications were blockage of an artery in the lung and infection. The findings were based on a review of almost 11,000 patient records by ABJHI for Alberta’s Bone and Joint Health Strategic Clinical Network. They were presented at the Osteoarthritis Research Society International’s 2015 World Congress in a poster authored by the research team of Christopher Smith, Tanya Christiansen, Hoa Khong, Dr. Deborah Marshall, Dr. Jason Werle and Jane Squire Howden.
