METRO NEWS: Return of Alberta health-care premiums could have an ‘unintentional’ planning benefit

METRO NEWS: On Tuesday night, Premier Jim Prentice announced a plan to reinstate health care premiums in Alberta, sparking debates across the province.

In an online budget survey conducted by the province, only 28 per cent of the population supported the return of health care premiums. However, in his pre-budget televised speech, Prentice said the current economic model is unsustainable and he will ask Albertans “to begin to contribute directly to the costs of the health system.”

According to Chris Smith, chief operating officer at Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institute, the change might offer an unexpected and “unintentional” benefit for the province.
